Long-term business success requires clear objectives, transparent measures and regular review. That is why ÖBB has strategically embedded its sustainability goals, defined measures and reports key Group figures transparently in its Non-Financial Statement.
In its day-to-day operations, as well as in projects and partnerships, ÖBB is working to develop mobility and logistics step by step and to reduce emissions within its own sphere of influence. The focus here is on environmental, economic and social aspects. In 2025, 559 million passengers and around 79 million tonnes of freight were transported.
Further highlights:
- The electricity for the rail network, as well as for ÖBB buildings and operational facilities, comes from 100 per cent renewable energy sources.
- With the 2027–2032 framework plan, we are continuing our investment strategy in a modern, high-performance and reliable rail network for the future. Investments totalling 19.5 billion euros are planned for this purpose. Find out more here.
- Across the Group, more than 48,000 bus and rail staff – including 2,145 apprentices – ensure that more than 1.5 million passengers reach their destinations every day.
- According to data from the Federal Environment Agency, every train journey with ÖBB in Austria in 2024 will generate more than 30 times fewer CO₂ emissions per person per kilometre than a typical passenger car. For short-haul flights, the ratio is around 50 (train: 4.66 CO₂eq/passenger-km vs. passenger car: 174 CO₂eq/passenger-km, flight <1,000 km: 261 CO₂eq/passenger-km).*
- Our rail and bus transport services save more than 4 million tonnes of CO₂e annually in Austria compared with providing the same transport services using passenger cars and trucks. The 4 million tonnes of CO₂ therefore corresponds to the volume of greenhouse gas emissions that would have been generated in Austria had ÖBB’s passenger and rail freight transport services been carried out by passenger cars and trucks on the roads instead of by rail and bus. This calculation is based on the UBA figures for 2023, which were published in May 2025.*

To calculate the EmpCo-relevant comparative figures between ÖBB’s transport services (passenger and rail freight transport by rail and bus in Austria) and the modes of transport passenger car, aeroplane and truck, the specific greenhouse gas emissions per passenger-kilometre / tonne-kilometre (g CO₂e/pkm or tkm) are used.
The emissions figures for ÖBB’s transport services (passenger and rail freight transport by rail and bus in Austria) are based on the key figures from the ÖBB Annual Report (sustainability section) for the reporting year (2023 or 2024, as applicable).
The comparative figures for passenger cars, air travel and trucks are taken from the emissions data published by the Austrian Federal Environment Agency. The documents linked below are available exclusively in German. Only the sum of direct emissions and upstream greenhouse gas emissions from fuel production and electricity generation is taken into account; vehicle manufacturing is excluded. The comparative figures are calculated on the basis of grams of CO₂ equivalents per g CO₂e/pkm or g CO₂e/tkm.
