The work package “Regional Railway” of the TARO research project is aiming to increase the efficiency and attractiveness of regional rail. Necessary investments, such as technologically secured railway crossings, are a considerable expense factor due to the need for an electricity supply. Alternative concepts that do not rely on a connection to the public power grid were successfully developed in this work package.
Another research focus is in Oberwart, Burgenland, where ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, FH Oberösterreich where the project partners Zelisko, Renercon, EBE Solutions, AIT and SCS Supercomputing are researching alternative means of communication and innovative security technology for regional railway.
“We have managed to show that it is possible to use alternative energy sources for railway operations. The work package will generally make regional railways more attractive and as a result we will be able to get more people excited about regional railway.”, says Julian Rauschka, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG
