Digital Twin Infrastructure

Developing a digital twin of railway infrastructure

The goal of TARO work package 2 is to contribute to the development of a digital twin of rail infrastructure. Using artificial intelligence, 3D data acquisition and simulation, the project partners ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, FH-Campus Wien, Joanneum Research and Rechenraum are creating a digital twin of the railway infrastructure. One of the challenges is to combine various necessary data streams and simulations. As a result, the digital twin can serve as a tool to gather information on rail infrastructure processes, for example how an increased number of train journeys will affect the condition of the tracks. As such, the Digital Twin is a key element for future Automated Train Operations (ATO).

“The innovative aspect of the Digital Twin Infrastructure is its focus on object detection, i.e. the automated recognition of structures such as top masts or signals within the 3D data using image recognition methods or artificial intelligence”, says Michaela Haberler-Weber, ÖBB Infrastruktur.
